Resolution to strengthen Sanctuary Universities

WHEREAS graduate student workers residing in North America and their communities face oppressive immigration regimes based on white supremacy and the legacy and experience of colonization, and

 

WHEREAS the threat of deportation is commonly used by the employer as a fear tactic against organized graduate employee labor and immigrant and international student mobilization, and

 

WHEREAS U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), the  Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), and other immigration enforcement agencies in North America operate as military forces targeting racialized communities, and

 

WHEREAS North American universities continue to profit from the mistreatment, detainment and removal of immigrants,

 

BE IT RESOLVED THAT CGEU stands in solidarity with those affected by oppressive immigration regimes and their communities by actively supporting the immigrant rights struggle in North America, and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT CGEU calls on all North American Universities to cut all existing contracts with immigration enforcement bodies and those who profit from them, and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT CGEU calls on and supports the formation of review commissions as necessary to investigate the treatment of graduate employees who are undocumented, international students, DACA and TPS recipient, and/or belonging to any other non-permanent immigration status on campus, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT CGEU supports a diversity of tactics beyond legislative action, and recognizes that this work cannot happen for directly affected communities but rather with them, letting those directly affected guide organizing tactics and strategies. In our own locals and organizations, this means creating and maintaining internal structures that empower and lift up the voices of members directly affected while not having their immigration status outed without their direct consent.
