Resolution for establishing the standing CGEU Communications Committee

(CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT)

WHEREAS frequent and timely communication is essential for maintaining and enhancing solidarity among grad workers ourselves across North America, as well as to promote our cause in the broader labor movement and the public,

 

BE IT RESOLVED THAT the following Article shall be added to the CGEU Constitution.

 

Article 7: Communications Committee

1. CGEU Communications Committee shall be responsible for using and maintaining various public communications channels of the CGEU, including the CGEU website, the listserv, the official facebook page, and other social media accounts as they may be established.

2. The Communications Committee shall make every effort to compile and spread the information on the grad labor movement in North America in a timely manner, and towards that end, the Committee must maintain a channel of communication from CGEU grad unions to receive information about their activities.

3. Annual CGEU Conference shall elect at least 5 members of the Communications Committee for the following year, with the term running until the Conference in the following year. At least 2 members shall be based in a Canadian union and 2 members in a U.S. union At least one member shall be fluent in French. No more than 15 members total, and no more than 2 members from the same local union shall be elected. One needs not be present at the CGEU Business Meeting in order to run for a position on the Committee, as long as they have written in advance their willingness to serve on the Committee and those who are not on the Committee may provide assistance.

4. The Communications Committee shall establish internal guidelines on posting on those media platforms to ensure fair, inclusive and efficient process, and made accessible.

5. In cases of a gross misconduct of a Communications Committee member relating to the use of website and/or social media, efforts at mediation shall be attempted, and in cases of such failure, they may be removed by a two-thirds vote of all other Committee members.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT Article III, Section 3, Section 4 Subsection 1, 2 of the CGEU Constitution shall be eliminated.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the CGEU Communications Committee create a new, user-friendly website in the Fall 2018 to facilitate frequent updating of the website. The cost for the website shall be covered by the CGEU annual conference budget.
